Human microglia-derived proinflammatory cytokines facilitate human retinal ganglion cell development and regeneration
Microglia influence developing RGCs. In this article, Ahmad and colleagues show that microglia-derived TNF-α and IL-1β influence neuritogenesis and the functional maturation of RGCs, an effect mediated by the MTOR pathway. They further show that these proinflammatory cytokines promote axon regeneration. These results suggest that homeostatic levels of proinflammatory cytokines are beneficial to RGCs.
